UNIQUE FEATURES

“I shall be telling this with a sigh, somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I---I took the one less traveled by--- and that has made all the difference.”
Robert Frost

  • School hours: 9:30 am---3:30 pm.
  • School begins the day after Labor Day in September.
  • There is no required daily or weekly homework (students work hard all day, they are tired after school, they need to time to free-play, and they need family time).
  • Students attend classes Mon-Thurs (4-day school week).
  • No school on Friday (student family time)
  • Friday is for teachers to develop individual educational plan for your child, prepare lessons and materials, and attend teacher training meetings.
  • 12 students maximum per room, one teacher, one aide per room minimum.
  • Have the same teacher for 2 years, if appropriate for the child.
  • No uniforms
  • Individualized education plan for every student.
  • Diagnostic-prescriptive teaching employed.
  • Less stringent structure for class grade level designations to facilitate individualized learning (however, test scores and records of academic work will reveal traditional grade level of each child according to U.S. grade level system, so that students can move from our school back into a more structured grade level system with ease).
  • Specific colors to enhance learning and attention used on walls per age group served in that room.
  • No fluorescent lights in the classrooms (incandescent lighting only---to facilitate well-being, sustained attention, reduce irritability, distractibility, hyperactivity, headaches, and fatigue).
  • Parent volunteerism vital part of the school community (specific ongoing committees).
  • Parent training classes and support groups.
  • The on-site Sullivan Educational Diagnostic Evaluation Center will provide thorough diagnostic testing and evaluation of child’s needs and possible disabilities for a fee of $900 (for those not enrolled in our school). This testing will be available for all school enrollees, after registration, for a discounted testing fee of $500. The testing information will be used to design your child’s educational program.
  • The Flint Academy will be a laboratory research school (research into the effectiveness of teaching interventions/programs will be ongoing; new materials and approaches can be introduced; interns from local universities and those working on doctoral dissertations will be welcome and encouraged to participate in the school).
